Throughout history, humans have always admired men who displayed masculine traits. From legendary war heroes to influential leaders, we have always been drawn to men who have dominant masculine qualities
But what does it really mean to be masculine?
Masculinity can be defined in many different ways, but is usually associated with traits such as strength, assertiveness, and bravery. Unfortunately, one of the most important masculine traits that's often viewed as predominantly feminine, is health.
From Commercials to magazines, women are often portrayed as the more vigilant sex when it comes to being healthy. Although this assumption may seem biased, there is a grain of truth. After 10 years of practicing medicine, Ive noticed that a lot of men are hesitant to get regular check ups, and rarely seek medical attention unless it is an emergency.
I believe that a big reason for this behavior has to do with our cultures skewed perception of masculinity. In our society men are almost expected to "man up" and avoid showing any signs of weakness. As a result, a lot of men would prefer to "tough it out," rather than seek the medical attention that they actually need.
Lets take a look at the 5 reasons why being healthy is a masculine trait.
1)Being Healthy Shows Leadership
When you commit to being healthy you are displaying leadership. If you think about it, every man is a leader in some way. Besides being the leader of your own life, you are also setting an example for everyone you meet.
If you happen to have children, they will most likely look to you for guidance. By demonstrating healthy habits, you will positively influence their development and be an example of true masculinity.
2)Being Healthy Shows Courage
In our culture masculinity is often characterized as being macho, headstrong, and stubborn. Although some men fit this description, truly masculine men acknowledge their vulnerabilities, and are courageous enough to face them head on.
Taking the necessary steps to improve your health can be uncomfortable. For instance, if you’re overweight and decided to get back into the gym, it can be very intimidating. Being around other people who are in better shape than you can easily stir up a lot of insecurities.
Making a commitment to being healthy shows that you have the courage to improve your life, which is a very masculine trait.
3)Being Healthy Shows Pride
“By living a healthy life, you are displaying the highest form of pride.”
Pride is a very common masculine trait that men naturally develop. By living a healthy life, you are displaying one of the highest forms of pride.Taking care of your body and your health shows that you have a high degree of self respect and self worth.
As humans, we tend to focus our attention on the things that we value the most. When you take pride in your health, you are celebrating your life and your masculinity.
4)Being Healthy Shows Strength
The most identifiable masculine feature for men is physical strength.
What comes to your mind when you see a very fit and muscular man? Chances are that you would assume he is a very healthy person. Everyone knows that achieving a sculpted physique requires consistent exercise and healthy eating habits.
Since strength and health go hand in hand, being healthy is a very masculine trait.
5)Being Healthy Shows Sacrifice
Being a man means having to make sacrifices. Whether it’s sacrificing our time or resources, we all must sacrifice something one way or the other.
Maintaining good health is no exception and involves constant sacrifice. Giving up unhealthy foods for healthier options, or skipping that Netflix marathon in order to workout are all examples of sacrifices that must be made in order to stay healthy.
Consistently making these decisions are no stroll in the park, and requires some serious inner strength. Having the discipline to make sacrifices in order to better your health is a very honorable and masculine trait.
Conclusion
Without a doubt, being healthy is a masculine trait. Take some time to think about some ways you can improve your health and become a better man.
