How To Make Weight Loss Goals That Actually Work

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

Studies show that over 80% of new year’s resolutions fail. The reason, lack of planning and preparation. In order to successfully maintain a healthy weight, you must have a plan that involves organized and clearly thought out goals.

When it comes to losing weight, a common mistake that a lot of men make is that they start the process without an effective plan. They figure if they just cut back on the junk food or start exercising a little bit more, everything will just fall into place.

Unfortunately, this thought process often leads to lack of direction, low motivation and ultimately failure. A more effective way to approach weight loss is by making clearly defined goals. An easy way to set up your goals is by using what’s known as the "SMART" method. Each letter in this pneumonic represents a key characteristic that each one of your goals should have.

S-SPECIFIC

When creating a goal, you must be as specific as possible. If your goal is not specific enough, you will have a very hard time measuring your progress. For example, Instead of generically saying that you want to "lose weight," try making your goal more specific by choosing to lose 25 pounds.

M-MEASURABLE

In order for your goals to be effective, they must be measurable. Being able to track your progress not only motivates you, but can also help identify things you may need to improve. For example, if your goal is to lose 25 pounds, a great way to measure your progress is by doing weight checks every two weeks.

A-ATTAINABLE

A major reason why a lot of men fail to reach their weight loss goals is because they were too unrealistic. Although challenging yourself is helpful for personal growth, making unattainable goals can lead to failure.

This is especially true when it comes to weight loss because in the beginning, most people don't begin to see results right away. It’s important to give yourself a fighting chance by setting up goals that you actually have a chance of achieving.

For example, instead having a goal of working out for 3 hours at a time every day, try having a more reasonable goal of working out for 30 minutes, 5 days per week.

R-RELEVANT

In order for your goals to be effective, they must be relevant. This is very important because when you start going through tough times, you’ll need strong enough reasons to continue moving towards your goal. An easy way to figure out if your goal is important enough is to really think about the end result that you’re seeking. Are you trying to lose weight to impress someone, or are you losing weight in order to live a longer and more fulfilling life?

T-TIME BOUND

The last part of the smart method deals with time. Even if you created goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, and relevant, they are powerless without a deadline.

The reason why deadlines are so important is because they keep you accountable.

Think about a time when you had a deadline for a project or some other activity. I’m pretty sure that you were more motivated to see it through.

CONCLUSION

Having clearly defined goals is necessary when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. By following the method you’ve just learned, you will be well on your way to achieving your goals.
